Are You Ready To Raise Healthy Queens For Healthy Hives?

A healthy queen means a healthy hive. She is responsible for laying all the eggs that will become the next generation of bees. A single queen can lay up to 2,000 eggs in a day! Breeding queen bees allows beekeepers to:

  • Ensure colony health: A strong queen helps the hive grow and stay productive.

  • Select good traits: Beekeepers can choose queens from colonies with desirable traits, like gentleness or resistance to disease.

  • Replace old queens: Queens usually live for 2-3 years. Replacing them ensures the colony doesn’t weaken.

In nature, bees create a new queen when they need one. They choose a few larvae (baby bees) and feed them a special diet called royal jelly. This rich food causes the larvae to grow into queens instead of worker bees.

  • Egg stage: The queen starts as a fertilized egg, just like a worker bee.

  • Larva stage: After hatching, the larva is fed royal jelly for several days.

  • Pupa stage: The larva spins a cocoon and begins its transformation.

  • Emerging queen: In about 16 days, a new queen emerges!
